In the lab: AMD's Radeon VII graphics card

AMD pulled some surprises out of its hat at CES this year not just by showing off one of its impressively efficient Zen 2 CPUs, but also by unveiling the first graphics card for consumers made on a 7-nm process. The aptly named Radeon VII has the GeForce RTX 2080 in its sights, according to AMD's own benchmarks, and it's got plenty of big numbers to go with its big britches. The Radeon VII… → Read More

So long, farewell

Readers of The Tech Report, It is with a heavy heart that I announce I am stepping down as the site's Editor-in-Chief, effective as of the end of this week. Nvidia promises major RTX boost with Battlefield V update

Our early performance testing for DirectX Raytracing effects in Battlefield V suggested that the tradeoff between frame rates and image quality with Nvidia's GeForce RTX cards was quite dear. We didn't write off the tech at the time, though, because a subsequent interview with DICE by Eurogamer suggested there were plenty of bugs to squash and plenty of low-hanging fruit to pick for RTX… → Read More

Antlion Audio bites off the cord to make its ModMic Wireless

Antlion Audio's ModMic can turn any pair of headphones into a high-quality headset, but that add-on has one unfortunate drawback: it adds another cable to any existing wires running back to its user's PC. The obvious solution to this problem is to get rid of the cord entirely, and that's just what the company has done with its ModMic Wireless. This add-on mic uses Qualcomm's aptX protocol to… → Read More

Intel graphics drivers go universal with 25.20.100.6444 release

One subtlety of the Windows 10 October Update (also known as version 1809) that may have been lost among its many growing pains is that it's the first widely-released version of Windows 10 that requires the use of Windows Modern Drivers (an initiative that might also go by the name of Universal Windows Drivers, or UWDs). The benefit of WMDs, according to Microsoft, is that a device maker such as… → Read More
